This song was written for people that I have loved and lost
to death or life, to sickness, circumstances or bacause it
was their time.
In the chorus I sing about silver bangles. These really
exist and were melted down from a silver brush and mirror
set belonging to my namesake grandmother. When Martha who
was my black mother for 30 years, left for the farm to
finish her house, my mother gave us each three bangles to
link us.
I
went overseas, my mother to Cape Town and Martha to Rust de
Winter. The chorus is just a reminder that we all return to
spirit.
Life is like a river, songs for unborn, wanted children,
It wasn't time, goodbye
Life is like a river, a sweet goodbye for a man, who had the
heart of William the Conqueror,
And fought like a lion, the disease, goodbye
Life is like a river, ode to my black mother, who worked her
whole life long for a house
Then closed her eyes and died, goodbye
Chorus:
But wild winds, and silver bangles, until we meet again
And soft stars and dancing angels, until we meet again.
Life is like a river, a love gone forever
It floats away and is lost to the sea
Life is like a river, a river that meets up with the sea, do
not grieve, do not grieve
